Hello! My name is Claudia Jäggi and I am a contemporary Swiss fiber artist (if you like you can visit my personal blog or my website). Switzerland used to have a lustrous textile industry up until a few decades ago. But unlike other countries like the UK where textile handicrafts are highly respected and even sponsored by the government, they seem to be somewhat forgotten here in my country. The tradition of wearing ethnic clothing and of girls making their handmade textile “Aussteuer” (textile dowry) themselves have died out. That is okay in view of freedom of expression, equality and feminism, but it is a pity regarding the traditional textile knowledge that once was handed down from one generation to another…
As my main technique is hand embroidery, I founded The Swiss Hand Embroiderers’ Guild in 2015 as a not-for-profit organization to bring handembroidery back into the spotlight in Switzerland. I created a website featuring selected fibre artists with main focus on hand embroidery that are or were located in Switzerland. Occasionally, I wrote short articles about the history of the Swiss textile industry with links to sources and exhibitions. Furthermore, I curated a fiber related (international) project in the name of the Swiss Hand Embroiderers’ Guild in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 (see here).
However, over the years I got to know more contemporary Swiss artists – textile or other – and a few gallery owners and artists’ or artizans’ coalitions. Thus my decision to “broaden the perspective” of this blog and include all fiber art techniques. I still want the blog’s main focus to lie on original Swiss textile artistry but am happy to collaborate with any other contemporary Swiss art form!
If you have a project idea involving (Swiss) fiber art, don’t hesitate to contact me. 🙂
